Wrongful Death Lawsuit Settles in Ohio

A wrongful death lawsuit has been settled against the City of Ironton, Ohio and the Ironton police department. The lawsuit which was filed for $2 million for emotional distress and loss of life was settled today.

According to reports, Aaron Roe died in 2007 after drowning in the Ohio River. The lawsuit alleged that Roe was at a local bar when another customer attempted to start a fight. Police were called to the scene and 3 officers pointed had pointed their Tasers at Roe. Roe ended up fleeing the scene.

The lawsuit also alleged that after fleeing from the scene, Roe jumped into the Ohio River to avoid police. The lawsuit also alleges that Roe was hit by a Taser when he was in the water, ultimately resulting in his death.

Chief Jim Carey was very sympathetic for the family but did defend the officers and by saying they did not use their Tasers on Roe while he was in the river.

Roe’s parents, Lois Porter and James Roe, filed the wrongful death lawsuit in 2008, in United States District Court. The amount of the settlement has not been disclosed.

Over the last few years the use of Taser’s has become very controversial. Studies have shown that Tasers and other high-voltage stun devices can cause cardiac arrhythmia, possibly leading to heart attack or death. While the use of Tasers have become routine for police work critics claim that taskers have caused by than 250 deaths since their inception.
